There are many categories in obtaining a green card to live and work permanetly in the United States which may be through a family member , through employment , investment, lottery program or through many other specific cases.
The US State government conducts a lottery program every year for obtaining Permanent Resident Card or Green Card. This lottery program is called as Diversity Visa lottery program.
Lottery dv 2011:
The lottery dv program was established in the 1996 Immigration Act. The basic idea for conducting the lottery program is to provide green cards to people from various regions who has less number of immigrants to the United States every year and thus creating immigration opportunity for the eligible people. The lottery issues 50,000 visas every year to people who meet the eligibility requirements per the US State Government, who are randomly selected from the entries. The program is administered by the U.S. Department of State Kentucky Consular Center.
The lottery dv is also an easy way of obtaining Green Card. There are very few basic eligibility criteria to participate in the lottery program conducted by the U.S. Department of State Kentucky Consular Center. Unlike other ways of obtaining a green card , the individuals need not be sponsored by a family member or the employer. If an individual wins the lottery program, his spouse and any unmarried children under 21 years, will be able to immigrate with him to the United States.
If a person wishes to participate in the lottery program, he/she must satisfy the basic two eligibility criteria .
The individual must be the native of one of the qualifying country. If the individual does not qualify, he/she may qualify through spouse or parents provided they are from an eligible country.
The individual must meet the eligibility requirements i.e either high school education or an equivalent or must have two years of work experience in an occupation in the past five years.
Before the registration period for the lottery dv program, the US State Department will publish the instructions for the lottery program. Many entries were rejected during the past years where the applicants failed to follow the instructions from the US State Department. The instructions are usually posted in the month of August every year. The lottery program is usually held between the month of October and December each year.
There is no fee charged for participating in the lottery program. At the Kentucky Consular Center all received entries will be numbered individually. Once the submission period for lottery dv is closed , the computer at the Kentucky Consular Center will randomly select the entries from all the entries received from all over the region.
Only the winners of the draw will be notified by mail by the US State Department. All the winners will be sent the instructions on next step and information on fees. Winning the lottery dv program does not guarantee a green card. All winners will be given the opportunity to apply for permanent residence and they will be interviewed. If the permanent residence is granted, then the individual will be issued the green card and will be allowed to live and work permanently in the United States.
