You must be wondering why a post about green card lottery, when we have been discussing what winners of the lottery need to do next. Well, there are so many, many people who are still unaware of the Green Card Lottery Program. This post is to give new visitors to this blog a heads up on the Diversity Visa program, especially since there are very few days left for the registration period to start.
The Green Card Lottery Program
The green card lottery program is the commonly used phrase for the Diversity Visa Program that was started by the US Department of State after being mandated by the Congress in 1990. This program makes available 55,000 green cards for eligible people from around the world. These people represent those countries that have sent fewer than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the past 5 years.
Why the Diversity Visa Program
The Diversity Visa or green card lottery program was brought about so that the US government could encourage natives from different countries to come and settle in America. This would add to the multi-cultural flavor of the nation and encourage integration of various traditions and cultures.
How does the program work?
The green card lottery is open to persons belonging to eligible countries. An eligible country, like I mentioned earlier, is one which has sent fewer than 50,000 immigrants to America during the last 5 years. Apart from this eligibility requirement, there is one other requirement that the applicant should meet – the applicant should have graduated high school or should have work experience of at least 2 years for which training should have happened for 2 years during the last 5 years.
The qualifying applicants need to file an application online on the government website. Each year, the government announces the registration period and only during this period will application be accepted online. The registration period for the 2014 lottery begins from noon on October 2, 2012 and ends at noon on November 3, 2012. The lottery is conducted in 2012 but it is called the 2014 lottery because the immigrant visas will be issued to the winners allowing them to enter the US in the fiscal year 2014.
How to file the application
During the registration period, you will have to log on to the government DV lottery site and complete an application. The application will ask for information about yourself and your spouse and children (if any). You will have to include the details of all your children, even if they are not going to come with you to the United States if you win the lottery. You will also have to upload passport style photos of yourself and everyone else who you have included on your application. The photos have to meet the specifications outlined by the government. You have 60 minutes to complete your application.
Once your application is successfully filed, you will get a screen with a confirmation number on it. You will have to note down and save that number. You can check your status online only and you need your confirmation number for this. If you loose the number you will never get it back again. So make sure you write it down and keep it safe. You will not get any information regarding whether you won the lottery or not. The only way to know your result is to check online using your confirmation number. The website will have information regarding the dates between which you can check your results.
Other important things to know
The application for the green card lottery is an electronic application – that means, it has to be submitted online only. There are no paper applications for this program. Likewise, there is no fees associated with this program. It is important to keep your confirmation number safe at all times. Once lost, its gone forever. You will not be able to get it back. Write it down and keep it safe.
